Solana’s largest NFT marketplace, Magic Eden, displayed pornographic images and images from the TV series “The Big Bang Theory,” after its third-party image hosting provider was compromised.
Magic Eden tweeted “Hey guys our image provider, a 3rd party service we use to cache images was compromised. Your NFTs are safe and Magic Eden has not been hacked.”
Users of Magic Eden started expressing concern that, occasionally, a pornographic image would flash in place of the NFT thumbnail while a collection’s page was loading.
While some users noticed that “Big Bang Theory” images momentarily flashed in place of their own NFTs before the actual artwork appeared as expected.
Users were encouraged by Magic Eden to “hard refresh” their browsers in order to resolve the problem. Magic Eden did state they have not been hacked and user NFTs are completely secure.
According to a representative for Magic Eden, the team fixed the problem within an hour of knowing about it.
The hack on the third-party provider, in Magic Eden’s opinion, did not intentionally target the NFT marketplace. Due to security concerns, the team would not reveal the name of the image hosting partner.
