Political commentator, podcaster, and Canadian Armed Forces Veteran Jeremy MacKenzie aka Raging Dissident is de-banked by the Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank) without giving any reason.
While notifying MacKenzie about the ban, Graham from Scotiabank noted on a phone call that “The bank determined that this relationship is outside of its risk appetite.” Graham added the team was informed by the head office but there is no further information available on why it is happening.
MacKenzie is also banned from entering any of the Scotiabank branches or premises in person without first getting written consent from the bank. MacKenzie would receive an official letter from the bank, and he will have 30 days to find alternative banks.
MacKenzie was visibly frustrated with the sudden notice saying “I might need to sue them because I feel like this is predatory, this is discriminatory because of my legal situation.”
Social media is going bonkers over the case with hashtags like #BoycottScotiabank and #ScotiaBankRun trending. The community is angered as the bank just banned someone without providing any reason and barred them from entering any of the Scotiabank branches.
The community questioned both the Canadian government and Scotiabank for misusing their power. They called out the entities for banning MacKenzie but still providing services to multiple criminals.
MacKenzie is the leader of Diagolon, identified as an ideologically motivated violent extremist organization. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested him in September and charged him with crimes in three provinces, including Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia.
Even though most of the community doesn’t agree with MacKenzie’s ideologies, they are noting the banks can do the same to any common man without any reason, so the calls for decentralization arose.
The community points out how crucial it is to maintain control over your own money and how these large corporations are exploiting individuals by acting as if they own their customers’ money.
Last February, Vitalik Buterin condemned the Canadian Government for trying to constrain the funding for the protesting truckers’ rally show saying that such events demonstrate why cryptocurrencies exist.
And that’s why we need a decentralized finance ecosystem!!
