The seven-time Ballon d’Or and four-time UEFA Champions League winner, Lionel Messi, backs web3 sports startup Matchday in a $21M seed funding round.
Lionel Messi’s venture capital firm Play Time became an investor along with Courtside Ventures, Greylock, HackVC, Capricorn Investment Group, and Horizons Ventures.
Matchday creates video games for football lovers that include players and competitions fully licensed by FIFA and FIFPRO. It has already signed a multi-year partnership with FIFA.
Sebastien de Halleux, Matchday’s Chief Gaming Officer stated: “Our games will be accessible for all players and centred around true ownership of digital items that will be a point of pride for all players.”
Matchday is not Lionel Messi’s first venture into the NFT world. Last November, Lionel Messi was named the brand ambassador of NFT Game Sorare. Lionel Messi also teamed up with fan token creators Socios.com as the platform’s first global ambassador.
