Tech giant Meta is reportedly building a decentralized social network codenamed “P92” for sharing text updates.
According to a Moneycontrol report, the new app will operate with ActivityPub, the decentralized technology that powers Mastodon, an open-source competitor of Twitter.
P92 will have a function that allows users to broadcast posts to users on other servers, and users of the new app will be able to join or build separate servers.
Except for comments on posts and messages, P92 begins with a feature set similar to Twitter.
P92 will utilize existing Instagram data, like names, profile images, followers, and so on, for those who sign up for the decentralized network.
An insider stated, “The team is also discussing whether to have the ability to reshare content like Twitter apart from business and creator accounts. A rights manager will be integrated from the beginning for first party content, but probably not for third party content from other apps and servers.”
Many companies have been attempting to capitalize on the rising trend of Twitter users looking for other platforms. Before the app is made public, the company has already enlisted the help of the legal department to identify any potential privacy issues.
The P92 team wants to access Instagram data from all users as openly as possible for analytics, product improvement, and ranking on P92, irrespective of whether they join P92.
The team is also debating whether accounts other than the ones labelled as corporate and creator will be able to reshare posts like on Twitter.
“We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests,” Meta stated.
