A “US based engineer” defrauded a 60-year-old Indian woman in a crypto scam between April 2022 and December 2022, looting around $30K (2.4 million INR).
A 60-year-old retired female executive of a private organization in Mumbai, a city on the west coast of India, registered a cheating case, According to media reports. According to the woman’s statement, the fraud started in early 2022 when she was searching for an ideal life partner on a matrimonial website.
According to the statement, the victim was contacted by a “US-based engineer” after registering on a matrimonial site, and the two started calling and chatting daily after exchanging phone numbers. Later, a man claiming to be a US-based engineer offered her a rapid way to make high returns in cryptocurrency investments and also shared the phone number of a person “who would guide her.”
The guide gave 60-year-old women a virtual account for crypto investing and handled their proper strategies, resulting in the women investing nearly $30K between April and December 2022. The virtual account reached $62,000 at one point.
When her investments were at their highest returns, she wanted to withdraw some money from a virtual account, but according to the report, the guide demanded around $15,000 in negotiation fees and taxes.
Amidst the thought of paying taxes and traditional fees, she noticed that her virtual account had become inactive, and two accused had stopped responding. This conspiracy prompted them to file a case of cheating with Mumbai’s North Zone Cyber Cell unit. Hence, the Mumbai Police swiftly registered a case under relevant cheating, criminal conspiracy, and forgery sections.
However, the Mumbai Police is yet to get much information about the accused.
