Popular NFT artist Beeple’s sculpture “S.2122” found its new home at Nanjing-based Deji Art Museum for a whopping $9 million. The new artwork was launched last week at Art Basel Hong Kong.
Beeple tweeted “this work is the next iteration of the ‘kinetic sculpture’ series and was made over the last year at the studio. It is similar in form to HUMAN ONE, but is more of an intricately detailed 3D sculpture telling a very different story.”
The 3-D artwork conveys the story of a possible future in about 100 years where climate change has forced humans to live in huge clusters in the middle of the ocean, but they are trying to pull off living in such conditions.
ARTnews notes “Beeple’s 3D animations play out on this screen, creating the illusion that the box contains a slice of the sci-fi worlds he often depicts in his illustrative work.”
This sculpture artwork will change over time. It will do so on a predetermined schedule: every 5 years, Beeple will alter the video to raise the water level, and over time, humans will start to live underwater.
In addition to addressing the reality of climate change, Beeple wanted to create a piece that conveyed a message of hope because he really thinks that people will always find a way to live.
“I strongly believe artworks like this, that blend the physical and digital world represent a massive opportunity to draw new people into what we do and get them to see the true potential of these mediums,” Beeple added.
