Cybercriminals have been found to be selling verified cryptocurrency accounts on the dark web for as little as $30 each. According to a new research paper from online data security provider Privacy Affairs, the hacked data on sale has been obtained by hackers recently. The report, titled “The Dark Web Price Index,” warns that the dark web is a hotbed of criminal activity.
According to a recent report by Privacy Affairs, a U.S.-verified Bittrex account can be purchased for as low as $30, while a Kraken-verified account is being sold for an alarming $1,170.
The cost of verified Kraken and Binance accounts has gone up considerably from last year. The Dark Web Price Index from last year showed that hackers were only paying $260 and $250 for these accounts.
Illegally obtained accounts can be used to avoid Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols on major cryptocurrency exchanges. Also, this information could be used to execute scams and fraudulent activities, such as phishing scams.
The dark web has much more than just cryptocurrency accounts for sale. Cybercriminals are also selling login credentials for online bank accounts with balances up to $2,000 for $60. Credit card information with balances of up to $5,000 is being sold for $110.
Privacy Affairs security researcher Miklos Zoltan stated, “If someone gets their hands on your financial details or social media credentials, the prices mentioned above are basically what it’s worth to them. There’s a good chance that you value these things much more than they do, as to them you’re just another mark for a quick buck.”
In addition, cybercriminals are selling login information for various social media accounts, such as Facebook, Airbnb, and Gmail, which have been hacked. The prices for these accounts start as low as $25.
