In a recent interview on the Shawn Ryan Show, ethical hacker Ryan Montgomery revealed how he had harnessed his hacking skills to mine cryptocurrency.
Montgomery had previously infected numerous computers, giving him complete control of their operations, including their keyboards and screens. Rather than using this access to exploit individuals, however, he turned his attention to cryptocurrency mining. His story offers a fascinating insight into the world of hacking and the lengths that some will go to in order to profit from the booming crypto market.
“At that time, it was just Bitcoin and Litecoin. I had quite a bit of infected computers mining at all times. The thing that I did that was, if you could say ‘nice,’ was that when the computer was idle, it would use 100% of the processor and the graphics card to mine the coins. And when the computer was in use, it would only use 20%.”
A former ethical hacker, Ryan Montgomery, has revealed how he used his skills to mine cryptocurrency without the users’ knowledge. Montgomery claimed that he had infected numerous computers, allowing him to control them and mine crypto without disrupting the users’ experience.
Montgomery estimates that tens of thousands of computers had been hacked and had joined a mining pool. However, he has since stopped this practice, citing his morals and other business opportunities as the reason.
