In an engaging interview at Blockchain Week Rome, Sebastien Borget, co-founder of The Sandbox, championed the idea of recognizing digital assets, such as cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), as valid property forms. Borget pointed out the rising number of “digital natives”—people with a deep understanding and familiarity with digital technology.
Borget stressed that digital natives now represent over half of the world’s population. As per a United Nations report from December 2021, approximately 5 billion people—nearly two-thirds of the global population—are online.
Given this significant shift towards a digital society, Borget contended that it’s essential to foster a future that appreciates the value of digital assets, particularly given the increasing time and money people spend on them.
The Metaverse, a potential solution, offers digital natives a unique platform for connection and engagement. Borget called upon governments to recognize the jobs and work that evolve within this sphere and to treat the digital economy as a concrete and legitimate sector.
Even in the face of global hurdles like the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and rising inflation, Borget visualized the Metaverse as a potent tool for positive societal change, increased awareness, and amplified inclusivity.
Borget also emphasized the importance of making digital content creation more accessible, which he believes could open new opportunities for individuals. Cryptocurrencies could provide access to payment systems in regions where traditional banking infrastructure is inadequate.
Borget also pointed to artificial intelligence (AI) as a vital tool that enhances creators’ abilities and accelerates the innovation process. Despite AI’s significant advancements, Borget warned that it still needs human input to refine and elevate the content it creates.
Expressing his ambitions, Borget outlined his desire to build a platform that allows people to nurture their unique talents and skills, especially in the virtual realm. He highlighted the potential of the virtual world to support mental health and stressed the importance of a platform that helps individuals find their purpose.
