Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, has identified three key technical “transitions” that he believes are essential for Ethereum’s success. In a recent blog post, Buterin emphasized the importance of layer-2 scaling, Smart contract wallet security, and privacy-preserving features.
Buterin pointed out that without sufficient scaling infrastructure, the Ethereum blockchain faces significant challenges. He highlighted the high transaction costs, which currently stand at $3.75 per transaction, potentially reaching $82.48 during a bull run. To avoid centralized workarounds, Buterin stressed the need for affordable transactions to enable mass adoption.
Smart contract wallets are a point of concern for Buterin, as user experience complexities arise when users manage multiple addresses simultaneously. This aspect needs improvement to ensure a seamless and user-friendly on-chain experience.
Furthermore, Buterin emphasized the need for enhanced wallet security and privacy features. He argued that in an on-chain world leveraging zero-knowledge rollups, wallets must not only protect authentication credentials but also safeguard user data. Enhancing identity, reputation, and social recovery systems is crucial to address privacy concerns.
To address privacy issues, Buterin suggested the implementation of stealth addresses, offering a potential solution for protecting user data.
However, Buterin acknowledged the challenges in coordinating these three transitions, as they potentially weaken the traditional “one user — one address” model and may complicate transaction execution. Questions arise regarding how users will obtain payment information or manage different assets stored across various chains.
Buterin concluded by emphasizing the importance of building infrastructure that improves the overall user experience. Achieving scalability, wallet security, and privacy for regular users is vital for Ethereum’s future success. Meeting this challenge goes beyond technical feasibility; it is about ensuring accessibility and usability for a broader user base.
