A brief service disruption occurred within Amazon Web Services (AWS), yet Ethereum network nodes, which heavily depend on Amazon’s hosting services, remained unaffected by this incident.
During June 13, there was a temporary outage of approximately three hours experienced by a popular cloud service provider. At 12:08 PM PDT, the company initiated an investigation into elevated error rates and latencies observed in specific regions of the United States.
The outage had a significant impact on notable news organizations, such as the Associated Press, causing challenges in their article publishing process. Evan Van Ness, a vocal supporter of Ethereum, took notice of this incident and made an observation that the Ethereum network remained unaffected by the outage.
Based on data from Ethernodes, a significant majority of the Ethereum network, accounting for approximately 34.5%, relies on hosting providers from Amazon.
Additionally, Van Ness pointed out that if the outage had occurred in Europe, the consequences could have been more pronounced. This is due to the substantial amount of Ether (ETH) staked on Lido, currently standing at approximately 7.1 million ETH, which constitutes around 35% of the total. “I imagine there would be some effect if AWS went down in Europe given how much of Lido is in the cloud.”
In the past, Ethereum has faced criticism regarding centralization concerns, primarily related to its dependence on infrastructure provider Infra. Infra offers network nodes to various companies and organizations, with many of them, including the liquid staking platform Lido, heavily relying on Amazon Web Services (AWS) for their cloud hosting needs.
Approximately 20 minutes after the problem was identified, AWS identified the root cause of the issue, linking it to a service known as AWS Lambda, which enables customers to run code for various types of applications.
After a duration of over three hours since the initial disruption, AWS provided an update stating that the problem had been resolved, and all AWS services were functioning normally again. This update was reported at 3:37 PM PDT.
