The Ethereum blockchain has a new protocol called Ethscriptions, Developed by Tom Lehman, co-founder of Genius.com, offering users the ability to create non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and other digital assets.
The protocol aims to provide a cheaper and more decentralized minting process compared to conventional smart contract-based methods.
Ethscriptions utilizes Ethereum “calldata,” enabling the inclusion of non-financial and arbitrary data within the main Ethereum blockchain.
Upon its launch on June 17, Ethscriptions experienced an overwhelming response from the community. Lehman, who goes by the Twitter handle @dumbnamenumbers, or otherwise known as Middlemarch, described the launch as a “huge success” and revealed that nearly 30,000 Ethscriptions were created within the first 18 hours.
The initial implementation of the protocol allows users to ethscribe image-only assets, provided they are under 96 kilobytes in size. However, Lehman plans to expand the protocol to support different file types in the future.
One of the debut projects on Ethscriptions called “Ethereum Punks,” garnered significant attention, with all 10,000 assets being claimed almost instantly. The surge in user activity caused the API interface for the official Ethscriptions website to temporarily crash.
While the success of Ethscriptions is noteworthy, it remains to be seen whether it will achieve the same level of popularity as the Bitcoin Ordinals protocol, which experienced a rapid increase in the number of inscribed assets on the Bitcoin network within a short period.
The Ethereum community’s willingness to embrace innovation and experimentation has set the stage for Ethscriptions’ enthusiastic reception. Developers and users alike are excited about the potential for creativity and innovation in blockchain technology.
The protocol ensures the global uniqueness of all valid Ethscriptions, providing a foundation for future developments in an L2 (Layer 2) world.
Despite experiencing occasional downtime due to overwhelming demand, Ethscriptions has made a promising start, attracting both new and existing users to explore its capabilities.
