The Russian Ministry of Energy expressed its support for the legalization of mining and expects lawmakers to approve the introduction of taxation for miners, as announced during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Pavel Snikkars, the Vice Minister of Energy, emphasized the ministry’s desire to classify crypto miners as a distinct category of energy consumers and implement taxation for this group. Snikkars highlighted the importance of identifying and regulating crypto miners and acknowledged that specific regulatory measures would need to be introduced to govern their activities effectively.
Russia has witnessed the emergence of several crypto-mining hotspots in recent years, with the Irkutsk Oblast in Siberia being one of the most prominent locations. While local authorities have expressed concerns about the strain on energy resources caused by miners, they have shown interest in allowing industrial mining operations to thrive.
To rectify the situation, the ministry proposes the establishment of a dedicated crypto-mining rate separate from both industrial and residential rates. This approach would provide a more accurate representation of the energy consumption associated with mining operations.
Miners in Russia have long called for the legalization of their industry, urging the government to expedite the process. The Vice Minister of Energy warned of potential consequences for the entire country if unregulated mining activities were allowed to persist.
The ministry is determined to ensure that the specific energy consumption needs of crypto miners are adequately represented through regulation and legislation. By bringing stability to the situation, the ministry aims to strike a balance that supports the crypto-mining industry while safeguarding the country’s energy resources.
