The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is projecting that its e-rupee Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) pilot program will hit a milestone of 1 million or 10 lakh retail users by the end of June, as stated by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
The pilot program for e-rupee comprises of two parts: a wholesale or interbank segment, which was initiated on November 1, 2022, and a retail segment that was launched on December 1, 2022.
Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary reinforced the initiative’s success, acknowledging the increasing popularity and user base.
These ambitious targets are seen as a testament to the RBI’s commitment to pushing digital currency adoption in India, a move that aligns with global trends toward digitizing traditional fiat currency.
As such, the end-of-June projection for 1 million users signals an important milestone for the country’s CBDC venture, demonstrating substantial growth and public acceptance within a relatively short span.
The potential realization of this goal will surely foster increased confidence and optimism for the program’s future developments and the broader acceptance of digital currencies in India.
