In order to encourage the use of the nation’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) program, Jinan, the capital of China’s eastern Shandong Province, has now introduced digital yuan payments on its entire bus network.
Initially, Jinan conducted a pilot to test CBDC payments on two bus lines, namely B52 and BRT5. Following a successful trial period, the city has now fully implemented this new payment method across all its bus routes.
According to a recent report by local media outlet Shunwang-Jinan Daily, the city of Jinan has upgraded its card readers and bus route software to facilitate payments using the county’s CBDC. This technological enhancement enables passengers to conveniently pay for their bus fares with the digital yuan.Â
In order to incentivize the adoption of the digital yuan, Jinan has introduced fare discounts for passengers who choose to utilize the CBDC payment method. As per the announcement, individuals can enjoy up to two discounted rides per day and a maximum of six discounted rides per month when paying with the digital yuan.
This initiative is part of a broader nationwide effort to encourage the widespread usage of the digital yuan in various regions across China.
A significant milestone in this endeavor was reached when the city of Changshu announced on April 23 that civil servant salaries would be paid in the digital yuan.
This decision encompassed personnel at all levels within public services, public institutions, and state-owned units, with the transition to the CBDC commencing in May.
In addition to its utilization in bus rides and civil servant salaries, the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) of the country has also been implemented in support of the Belt and Road initiative and cross-border trades.
