The financial authority in South Africa has mandated that local cryptocurrency exchanges get licenses by the end of this year in order to protect investors in the country’s cryptocurrency industry.
According to the Bloomberg report, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) has already received approximately 20 license applications since it began accepting them a few weeks ago, and more are expected before the November 30 deadline,
FSCA Commissioner Unathi Kamlana stated during an interview that the regulator intends to take “enforcement action” against firms that continue to operate without a license after the deadline, potentially leading to closures or fines.
Kamlana emphasized the need for a regulatory framework, citing the potential risks to financial customers associated with crypto products. He expressed that, “time will tell the effectiveness of our measures, and we will continue to work together with the industry to refine and make changes where and if necessary.”
In South Africa, there are prominent companies operating in the crypto space including Binance, Luno (owned by Barry Silbert’s Digital Currency Group), and VALR (backed by Pantera Capital). These entities are required to obtain licenses within the given deadline. Unfortunately, South Africa has experienced significant crypto scams in the past, resulting in substantial financial losses for investors.
To address the oversight of cryptocurrencies, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) is collaborating with an “inter-governmental fintech working group.” This group consists of financial regulators and policymakers such as the National Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank.
As part of the efforts to safeguard consumers, the measures being taken also involve financial education and increasing public awareness regarding cryptocurrency products, as per Kamkana. He added, “It is an area where you can lose quite a bit of money so you must think twice before exposing yourself to it,” he added.
