A leading Ethereum layer-2 development firm Polygon has put forward a proposal that aims to introduce a new protocol token called POL, which would replace MATIC.
The proposal is currently under consideration by the Polygon community. If approved, the upgrade process is expected in the next upcoming months and this time allows token holders a proper transition period to complete the switch from MATIC to POL..
To facilitate the transition from MATIC to POL, token holders are required to send their MATIC tokens to a designated smart contract. This automated process will replace the MATIC tokens with POL tokens at a 1:1 ratio, subsequently delivering the new tokens to the holders’ specified addresses.
Polygon’s ambitious rebranding initiative, known as Polygon 2.0, underscores its commitment to advancing Ethereum scaling solutions and advance security measures. The introduction of POL seeks to expand the Polygon protocol through the implementation of exciting features such as Polygon PoS, Supernets, and zkEVM.
