The second largest blockchain, Ethereum turned 8 today as the network was sent live first on July 30, 2015.
On this day, former Ethereum CCO Stephan Tual announced the launch of Ethereum citing many of the validators generated and loaded Ethereum Genesis Block.
“The vision of a censorship-proof ‘world computer’ that anyone can program, paying exclusively for what they use and nothing more, is now a reality,” Stephan wrote in the blogpost.
Ethereum and its native currency Ether (ETH) has seen exponential growth since, becoming the second largest crypto asset platform after Bitcoin. It has held this place for a long time amid several blockchain projects’ inception till date.
With a market capitalization of $225 billion and thousands of smart contracts deployed on its network, Ethereum has over 20,000 monthly active developers and a total of 147 million commits.

On occasion, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) shared a post on X with a picture of him with the Ethereum team. He said, “a little throwback to May 2, 2015, in Tokyo, just before ETH was officially born.”
Ethereum was co-founded by several developers including lead founder Vitalik Buterin, Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Joseph Lubin and Anthony Di Lorio.
Ethereum has been through numerous upgrades in this timeline with the most notable ‘The Merge’ upgrade went live in September 2022, which transited its network from Proof-of-Work (PoW) blockchain to complete Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain.
