The east African country, Kenya has suspended Worldcoin until relevant government body investigate and clarifies the risks to general public.
The Ministry of Inerior and National Administration published a statement on Facebok saying, “ The Government is concerned by the ongoing activities of an oraganization calling itself ‘WORLD COIN’ (…) involved in the registration of citizens through collection of itis/eyeball data.”
The statement is signed by Kithure Kindiki, the Cabinet Secretary of the government body, citing the Government has suspended activities of Worldcoin and any other entity that engage with Kenyan citizens in a similar way.
Statement further says that relevant security, financial services and data protection agencies have commenced inquiries and investigations on the project. It also raises concern about the safety and protection of user data collected by the Worldcoin project.
Kenya is one of the biggest market for Worldcoin which has hundreds of thousands of users signed up already. The capital of the country, Nairobi alone has more than a quarter million signs-ups.
Earlier, The Kenyan government urged caution and warned its citizens following the mass rush to sign up for Worldcoin. The country has 45 Worldcoin Orbs installed.
