Continuing their ongoing sponsorship of the professional women’s basketball league, Coinbase, a well-known cryptocurrency exchange, gifted WNBA players with Bitcoin worth $120,000.
During the WNBA’s Commissioner’s Cup Championship, players from both the New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces teams of 12 players each, were given $5,000 worth of Bitcoin, directly deposited into their personal Coinbase accounts.
On Tuesday, New York Liberty won the final game at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. The unique aspect of this event was that fans in attendance were offered NFT collectibles from Coinbase. They were granted a 25% discount for the WNBA’s online store, allowing them to purchase merchandise related to the team or the league.
This kind of initiative demonstrates the growing trend of integrating blockchain technology and NFTs into sports and entertainment experiences, providing fans with unique and valuable digital collectibles along with various benefits.
Coinbase expanded its partnership with the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) in 2022. This partnership with NBA was initially established in September 2021, when Coinbase became the first cryptocurrency sponsor for both the WNBA and the NBA (National Basketball Association).
As part of this collaboration, Coinbase provides WNBA players with crypto educational content to help them understand and navigate the world of cryptocurrencies.
In addition to its league-wide sponsorship, Coinbase’s involvement with the WNBA extends to individual sponsorships of teams like the Liberty and the Seattle Storm, along with individual agreements with star players Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd.
