A former Chinese Communist Party member, Yi Xiao, has been sentenced to life in prison for his wrongdoing. The court in China found him guilty of accepting illicit funds and abusing his authority.
He took about $17 million in bribes from 2008 to 2021 and helped companies mine cryptocurrency, a type of digital money not allowed in China. His actions caused significant problems for the country and its people.
China has had a difficult relationship with cryptocurrency. They prohibited banks from dealing with it in 2013 and banned ICOs in 2017 to safeguard their money and prevent unlawful money transfers. In 2019, they also started opposing a specific kind of cryptocurrency mining known as Bitcoin mining.
As a consequence of his actions, Xiao has been given a life sentence and lost his political rights. He has forfeited all his possessions. This demonstrates how China handles individuals involved in misconduct, particularly concerning money and authority.
