In a recent turn of events, the decentralized social media protocol Farcaster has made the strategic decision to transition its project onto the OP Mainnet Layer 2 network. This move aims to pave the way for universal user access by introducing “permissionless sign-ups” to the platform.
Dan Romero, one of the co-founders of Farcaster, officially announced the migration plan for this decentralized social media protocol through X’s (Twitter) post shared on August 22nd.
According to the details shared on X, Farcaster’s migration plan involves moving the entire project, along with its application and linked smart contract, from Ethereum to the OP Mainnet (Optimism), a highly utilized Layer 2 network.
Dan Romero also underscored the significance of an imminent milestone. He explained once the Farcaster makes the transaction to OP Mainnet and activates permissionless sign-ups, “there are zero corporate APIs required to use the network.”
Boasting a user base exceeding 10,000, Farcaster emerges as a notable player in the realm of decentralized social media. It presently operates on the Ethereum platform, although a significant chunk of social media data finds storage off-chain within designated Farcaster Hubs.
