The Ethereum co-founder, Vitalik Buterin’s X (Twitter) account was compromised on Sunday with the hacker successfully managing to steal approximately $700k worth of crypto and NFTs via a phishing scam.
The attacker shared a post promoting an NFT collection mint that contained malicious code. Several users fell into the trap as they rushed to mint free NFTs while the affiliated link leading to a phishing website that drained crypto assets and NFTs from the user wallet.
While the stolen assets include Ether and NFTs, it is estimated that the hacker has drained a total of $691k of assets from hundreds of users, confirms the onchain sleuth ZachXBT.
The crypto assets also include blue chip NFTs from CryptoPunk worth roughly 153 ETH. Most of the stolen NFTs have been sold by hacker.
Following the news, Binance CEO CZ warned users that twitter’s security is not designed as secure as for a finance platform. He advised not to interact with such posts even if it’s from the biggest KOLs.
