The most popular crypto wallet, MetaMask, has launched ‘Snaps’ to enhance the user experience by allowing third party integrations into the wallet.
MetaMask Snaps is a new feature that allows users to add new features and functionality to their wallet. These snaps can be developed by third-party developers and can do things like connect to new blockchains, improve transaction security, or provide notifications.
For example, there is a snap called Zion that allows MetaMask to directly manage Bitcoin within the MetaMask interface without having to wrap tokens. This means for the first time ever, Metamask users can now use their wallet to store Bitcoin.
MetaMask Snaps is still in its early stages, but it will enable “a Chat Snap” to send and receive messages directly via MetaMask wallet.
The team has rolled out Snaps ecosystem in open beta version currently with more than 30 audited Snaps currently available in directory.
The announcement states that the launch of Snaps is a great start towards forming a permissionless ecosystem where developers can build a variety of features for MetaMask. It will be installed and used by wallet’s millions of users.
This new primitive will provide independent developers with APIs and infrastructure to develop in-wallet functionalities.
“With Snaps, we hope to capture the full extent of the innovation happening in web3, by enabling developers to bring their specialist expertise by building for our platform,” MetaMask said in the announcement.
