The layer 2 network of the BNB Chain, opBNB, goes live on the mainnet. It is developed using Optimism’s OP stack and is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
The EVM-compatible layer 2 roll-up aims to foster the BNB Chain ecosystem by offering ‘lightning-fast transactions’ with cheaper gas fees as low as $0.005 per transaction.
The network was previously launched on the testnet, where it achieved significant traction with over 35 million transactions, a total of 435k wallet addresses, and more than 150 dApps deployed.
The team claims that the opBNB testnet has an average 1 second block time and can handle up to 150k transactions daily. It is capable of achieving a peak of 4000 transactions per second (TPS), according to the announcement blog post.
“We are also excited to share that over 150 projects are committed to integrating or building on opBNB, with some protocols already live!” the team says.
opBNB is another major network going live in the growing ecosystem of OP-stack based chains. It has also been used by the leading crypto exchange Coinbase in developing its native layer 2 network, Base.
