A group of British politicians recently used the metaverse to talk to leaders from 51 different countries on September 20. They discussed the future of blockchain and Web3 industries in the United Kingdom.
During this virtual gathering in the metaverse, eight British Lords and politicians spoke to global leaders about the opportunities and challenges related to the growth of Web3 technology.
Natalie Elphicke, a member of parliament who leads the new All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Blockchain Technologies, appeared in the metaverse as her unique digital representation.
She emphasized the importance of the next phase of the internet saying, “Web3 represents a paradigm shift that reimagines the very fabric of the internet.”
Natalie Elphicke mentioned that the U.K. has the potential to be a blockchain-enabled “smart country” and she even pointed out that the UK is falling behind its competitors in terms of creating and maintaining jobs related to blockchain technology.
Elphicke even stated that the top most priority for the UK needs to be the growth of the Web3 industry and to plan accordingly for the workforce needed in this field.
Elphicke is calling for increased global cooperation and plans to use blockchain technology. She pointed out that less than 12 countries have laid out their plans for blockchain technology.
She also emphasized the importance of advancing the National Blockchain Roadmap, which was released in 2021.
This roadmap aims to create a digital nation using blockchain, where the technology is used for things like addressing climate change, connecting industries, and improving digital identity systems.
She also mentioned DeFi, stating that it poses “unique challenges and opportunities for regulators and policymakers,” before adding that “ensuring transparency, auditability, and accountability in these ecosystems is paramount.”
