The Digital Yuan app in China has been updated to facilitate tourists’ use of digital money more easily. Visitors can now top up their Digital Yuan wallets with a Mastercard or VISA card prior to arriving in China.
The e-CNY app, which is currently in beta, is available to iPhone users in some regions of China and China-based Google Play Store users. It enables consumers to make personal digital wallets for the state-backed digital renminbi e-CNY.
As part of its latest update (version 1.1.1), international tourists can now top up their e-CNY wallets through Mastercard and VISA credit cards. It’s an improvement aligned with China hosting the Asian Games.
In China, e-CNY is being experimented with by international tourists to make payments while in the country. For example, when China held the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, it allowed tourists to spend e-CNY at local stores.
Beijing is trying to make the e-CNY a commonly used payment method within the country for physical retail stores and online purchases to streamline everyday transactions for the Chinese population.
