False information can quickly spread on social media, even if the original post has been removed. Roblox has refuted claims that it will enable XRP payments, despite widespread reports on Tuesday.
The company clarified that any idea of gamers being able to use Ripple’s XRP to purchase Robux for in-game items is incorrect.
Rumors began spreading on Monday when BitPay posted a tweet that suggested users could now use Ripple’s XRP cryptocurrency to make payments for in-game purchases in supported games like Roblox and Smite.
BitPay’s Chief Marketing Officer, Bill Zielke, explained that the tweet was deleted due to an error and mentioned that they would be sharing more tweets in the future about businesses accepting cryptocurrencies as a payment method. So, they advised people to stay tuned for further updates.
Even though the post was taken down, some rumors quickly spread. The Bitpay mistake sparked rumors among the community and journalists misunderstood the situation, thinking that Roblox was going to start using the cryptocurrency XRP for payments.
A tweet from a well-known cryptocurrency investor, Scott Melker, with around 270,000 views, wrongly connected Roblox and XRP, and suggested that this indicated a more favorable legal environment for XRP.
However, these claims were not backed by evidence and lacked a credible source. Roblox clarified via email that these claims, such as the idea that Roblox was partnering with BitPay to introduce XRP for gamers, were completely untrue.
