Nayib Bukele, the pro-Bitcoin president of El Salvador, has filed paperwork to be re-elected in the upcoming presidential election.
The ruling party of El Salvador, Neuva Ideas officially nominated Bukele to be their presidential candidate on October 26. This decision was strongly welcomed by the public ahead of the election to be held in February 2024.
“Today is a good day to remember that immediate presidential re-election is prohibited up to 7 times by the Constitution,” Bukele said in a speech to thousands of citizens.
As his 5 years of term being president nears closing, Bukele stated “Five more, five more and not one step back,” and said that, “we need five years to continue improving our county.”
Bukele became the president of El Salvador in 2019 after Neuva Ideas came to power, which is currently the most popular political party in the country.
El Salvador came to limelight with president Bukele’s efforts to make it a Bitcoin friendly country nation. It became the world’s first country to make Bitcoin a legal tender in September 2021.
Bukele has also been buying Bitcoin gradually over the past years.
