In the wake of ApeFest’s celebration in Hong Kong, a stream of health concerns has surfaced. Attendees have reported alarming symptoms affecting their eyes and skin. Consequently, the crypto community is buzzing with worry and speculation.
Hong Kong’s vibrant ApeFest, hosted from November 3-5, has been tarnished by many health complaints. Users on social platforms have been vocal about distressing eye and skin conditions post-event. One user’s experience of “eyes burning” and “extreme pain” led to an emergency room visit. Moreover, in a telling thread, over ten other participants echoed similar woes, with a few citing a diagnosis of photokeratitis.
Photokeratitis is a painful condition typically caused by excessive ultraviolet radiation exposure, often linked to activities like welding without proper eye protection. Significantly, a physician notes that the intensity and wavelength of light are key factors, suggesting that high UV lights could be the culprit. Additionally, the risk heightens if any of these lights are damaged, potentially leading to a broader spread of injuries.
Prompt Response and Investigation
Yuga Labs, the pioneering crypto firm behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection, has acknowledged the issue and is actively reaching out to those affected. Yuga Labs stated although the number of reported cases is relatively small, they are committed to a thorough investigation to determine the actual cause. They also claimed to have been in direct contact with a handful of affected individuals, ensuring that this represents less than one percent of the nearly 2,250 attendees.
Despite the distress, the online response has rapidly turned from alarmed to cavalier. Within 31 hours, an affected user shifted from reporting eye pain to declaring the event the “best ApeFest yet.” This swift change encapsulates the often unpredictable nature of the crypto community’s online discourse.
The community watches on as investigations continue. The imperative now is not only to resolve the current situation but also to prevent such occurrences in future events, safeguarding the health and safety of all participants. Yuga Labs’ response and subsequent actions will be closely scrutinized as details emerge.
