The popular yellow family from the long-running cartoon series “The Simpsons” explored the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrency in a special Halloween-themed episode that aired on Sunday.
The ‘Treehouse of Horror’ episode follows the adventures of the Simpson family in a made-up metaverse known as Microcosm.
Here, an unexpected turn of events results in Bart Simpson becoming an NFT, a distinct digital token that embodies his persona. In the episode, various Simpsons characters, including famous Springfieldians and family members, negotiate the worlds of digital art and decentralized finance.
Springfield Punks, an assortment of 3,405 NFTs by Italian artist Rino Russo, went live and sold out fast as the episode was airing. Minting one was free for collectors, while further NFTs cost 0.01 ETH ($19) each.
At the time of writing, the collection’s floor price was above 0.4 ETH ($700), but it eventually settled at a more reasonable 0.14 ETH.
The most recent episode of “The Simpsons” carries on the longstanding tradition of social criticism and cultural parody by discussing cryptocurrencies and NFTs at a time when the markets are beginning to rebound.
Even though the show makes fun of NFTs, it’s important to remember that its creator, Disney, did not hold back from making money during the peak of the 2021 bull market.
Further boosting sentiment has been the BLUR token’s surge ahead of Season 2’s finale on November 20 and Wylie Aronow, co-founder of Yuga Labs, spending $1.1 million (600 ETH) on an uncommon CryptoPunk.
