Pittsburgh-based space company Astrobotic Technology Inc. has planned to send a physical version of the popular meme cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE) to the Moon in late December 2024. The mission is funded by the Dogecoin community as part of an initiative that began in 2015.
According to the Dogecoin tweet on Nov. 16, the coin will be sent in a DHL Moonbox aboard United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur Rocket.
The launch is scheduled for December 23, 2024, from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. According to CoinGecko, the price of DOGE rallied 8.7% to reach $0.079 after the announcement.
Earlier this year, crypto trading platform BitMEX announced a partnership with Astrobotic and Bitcoin Magazine to send the first physical bitcoin to the Moon over the summer, along with a metal plate etching the Genesis Block data. However, no confirmation has emerged on whether that earlier mission was successful. The new DOGE moon mission marks an exciting milestone for the meme cryptocurrency community.
