Circle, a global financial technology firm that powers internet-based payments and the digital currency USDC, has refuted accusations made by the Campaign for Accountability (CfA) regarding its business practices.
In a letter to Senators Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren, Circle’s Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Global Policy, Dante Disparte, addressed the CFA’s claims, calling them “errors, omissions, and misleading information.”
Circle Refutes Hamas Financing Allegations
The CFA’s letter alleged that Circle facilitates and finances Hamas, a Palestinian militant organization designated as a terrorist group by the United States and other countries. Circle vehemently denies these accusations, stating that it “does not facilitate, directly or indirectly, or finance Hamas or any other illicit actors.
The company emphasized its commitment to legal and ethical business practices, firmly stating that it does not, and has not, facilitated any transactions linked to illegal activities.
Clarification on Justin Sun and Related Entities
Other key clarifications in Circle’s letter was its relationship with Justin Sun, the founder of the TRON Foundation, and Huobi Global, now known as HTX.
Contrary to the claims, Circle asserted that it does not provide banking services to Justin Sun, the TRON Foundation, or HTX.
The company stated that neither Justin Sun nor his entities, including the TRON Foundation and Huobi Global, hold accounts with Circle. This response comes after allegations suggesting Circle’s involvement with these entities.
In the letter, Circle also revealed that in February 2023, it terminated all accounts associated with Justin Sun and his affiliated companies. This decision was made despite the U.S. government not designating Mr. Sun or his entities as Specially Designated Nationals.
Circle’s proactive measure underlines its commitment to compliance with legal standards and its vigilance against potential misuse of its services.
As the situation unfolds, Circle’s stance and actions could influence the broader discussion on the intersection of cryptocurrency and global security concerns. The crypto finance industry, regulators, and the public closely watch these developments.
