Dogecoin (DOGE) has received over 50 mentions in the source code for Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck pre-order page when it launched in late November. No other cryptocurrency earned such privileged real estate.
First identified in October by crypto influencer Marty Party, the references reflect Elon Musk’s well-known fondness for the meme coin. Tesla already accepts DOGE for merchandise purchases, but the Cybertruck code hints at the potential for far greater adoption.
Alas, when Cybertruck pre-orders opened to great fanfare, Dogecoin failed to appear as a payment option. Still, the behind-the-scenes preference for DOGE paired with Musk’s affection offers hope for future functionality.
This would not be Tesla’s first foray into crypto payments. Bitcoin enjoyed some time in the spotlight for vehicle purchases before Tesla halted the option over environmental concerns in early 2021.
For now, Dogecoin’s pride of place in Tesla’s code stands as a teaser. But if Elon Musk gets his way, DOGE may yet emerge as currency of choice when Tesla’s long-awaited Cybertruck hits the road.
