Worldcoin, co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, has unveiled an extensive update to its identity platform, World ID 2.0.
This upgrade includes significant integrations with notable tech companies and introduces a multi-tier verification system.
The upgrade, described as a “monumental” step by Tiago Sada of Tools for Humanity, the organization behind Worldcoin, aims to streamline online identity verification. Shopify, Mercado Libre, Minecraft, Reddit, and Telegram are among the companies adopting World ID for user authentication.
Orb Technology at the Forefront
The retina-scanning orb is central to Worldcoin’s approach, a unique device for initial user authentication. This technology ensures the uniqueness of each World ID passport holder, distinguishing real users from bots.
Despite privacy concerns about the use of biometric data, Tools for Humanity assures that the scans are only for initial verification and are not stored.
The new World ID 2.0 allows users to confirm their humanity to apps and services without revealing their identity, offering a privacy-focused alternative to traditional authentication systems.
World ID 2.0 introduces multiple levels of verification to cater to diverse user needs. The basic level, which forgoes retina scans, allows users to authenticate on their devices, broadening accessibility.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Orb Plus tier requires orb-authenticated users to re-verify on their devices for each sign-in, offering enhanced security.
Nearly five million people have registered for World IDs since its inception in 2021, with significant adoption in countries like Chile, Argentina, and Portugal.
This update signifies Worldcoin’s commitment to evolving digital identity verification in an increasingly digital world.
