In a record-breaking NFT heist, valued NFTs, including 37 Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and 13 Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), were pilfered from NFT Trader.
The hacker, operating under the address 0x13d8faF4A690f5AE52E2D2C52938d1167057B9af, liquidated the stolen assets at 0xC310e760778ECBca4C65B6C559874757A4c4Ece0, prompting an urgent response.
The scale of this unprecedented cyber heist, netting millions in stolen NFTs, includes top-tier items valued at over $300,000. The affected assets span BAYC, MAYC, World of Women (WoW), and other high-value NFTs, now being shifted through various platforms like Blur, x2y2, and OpenSea Swap without authorization.
The hacker, initially demanding a ransom for the safe return of stolen NFTs, took an unforeseen turn by voluntarily returning some NFTs for free. Transactions verified on the Ethereum blockchain showed the return of WOW, BAYC, and even VFTs.
Adding a personal angle, recent revelations hinted that the hacker might be female, adding layers of intrigue to the ongoing saga.
BAYC’s founder, Garga, intervened by offering to pay 10% of the demanded ETH reward to facilitate the return of the pilfered BAYC monkeys, sparking debates on ethical considerations within the NFT community.
To mitigate further risks, NFT Trader advised users to revoke permissions to compromised addresses through Revoke.cash, highlighting the urgency to safeguard assets from unauthorized transactions.
The situation presents an ethical quandary for affected users: whether to comply with the hacker’s demands or refrain from supporting criminal activities. However, concerns arise over incentivizing cyber attackers through ransom payments, emphasizing the need for fortified cybersecurity measures.
The NFT community grapples with the aftermath, highlighting the vulnerabilities in digital asset ecosystems. The interconnectedness of recent hacks underscores the necessity for bolstered security measures across the blockchain domain.
As the pursuit of the stolen assets continues, the NFT community strives to recover from this tragic incident, emphasizing the critical need for heightened security and ethical deliberation in the evolving landscape of digital assets.
