Reddit users have found a fake video of Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse urging XRP holders to send their coins to a specific address with a promise to return double the amount, a tactic commonly used by scammers.
In a Reddit discussion, one user mentioned seeing this deceptive ad on YouTube around November 25 and December 3. Several other Reddit users also shared that they had come across similar misleading ads and had reported them.
In a video, there was a digital version of Garlinghouse, which seemed to have been created by AI. This digital Garlinghouse encouraged viewers to join an XRP event. The instructions were to send XRP tokens to a specific address. In exchange, the video character promised to send back double the amount in what appeared to be a fraudulent giveaway.
A Reddit user shared that Google declined to remove a suspicious video ad targeting cryptocurrency users. The Reddit user posted a picture of a reply they received from Google’s Trust and Safety Team. It showed that Google’s team stated that the ad did not violate any policies and asked the user to provide additional details within the next six months.
At the time of writing, a YouTube video of the same ad had over 19,000 views. They warned others not to scan the video’s QR code to prevent potential financial losses.
