The iconic 1928 animation “Steamboat Willie,” featuring Mickey Mouse, has recently become part of the public domain in the U.S., allowing artists and creators to use this early depiction of Mickey without formal permission.
In light of this copyright change on January 1st, crypto enthusiasts swiftly launched a digital currency named $MICKEY.
Drawing inspiration from Mickey Mouse’s portrayal in the classic film, the MICKEY cryptocurrency is currently built on the Ethereum blockchain and boasts a market value of approximately $6,500, given its recent inception.
The Mickey Token’s website states: “Mickey is and always will be a timeless icon of culture. Meme coins have become a digital reflection of culture. The launch of the Mickey token not only marks his release into the public domain but also the beginning of a new adventure into the unknown.”
In the U.S., characters are safeguarded by intellectual property regulations for up to 95 years. The debut of Mickey Mouse in “Steamboat Willie” is particularly notable as it represents the character’s cinematic introduction, conceived by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.
Despite the expiration of copyright for the original 1928 Mickey Mouse, Disney has emphasized its intent to uphold intellectual property rights concerning subsequent versions of Mickey and other copyrighted content.
