Arbitrum Orbit, a platform for building Layer 3 blockchains on Ethereum’s Layer 2 network, has innovatively added support for custom gas tokens.
This significant update enables Orbit blockchains to use select ERC-20 tokens for transaction fees, previously limited to ether. This feature enhances the utility of Orbit’s own tokens and fosters ecosystem growth.
Integrating ERC-20 tokens as gas tokens allows for a more flexible and efficient transaction process. For example, Xai Gaming, an Orbit chain developed in collaboration with Arbitrum, is poised to leverage this feature immediately.
This implementation aims to reduce user friction, a critical barrier in adopting web3 gaming. Soban “Soby” Saqib, Co-Founder of Ex Populus, highlights that this move improves user experience and addresses challenges in distributed systems security.
Orbit’s Strategic Expansion and ARB’s Rise
Launched in March 2023, Arbitrum Orbit has been pivotal in attracting more developers to its ecosystem. With the custom gas tokens feature, exclusive to Orbit AnyTrust chains, Arbitrum continues to innovate.
The platform’s progress is underscored by the all-time high of its native ARB token, contributing to a substantial $2.5 billion total value locked in its contracts.
This strategic advancement positions Arbitrum as a frontrunner in Ethereum Layer 2 networks, demonstrating its commitment to ecosystem enhancement and technological innovation.
