Mercari, a prominent e-commerce platform in Japan with a user base exceeding 22 million per month, is gearing up to introduce Bitcoin payments by June, as reported by Nikkei.
Although products will still be priced in Japanese yen on the platform, users will have the convenience of settling their purchases using Bitcoin, the leading cryptocurrency globally.
Bitcoin transactions will be facilitated through its Tokyo-based crypto exchange subsidiary, Melcoin. The role of Melcoin will primarily be to convert the Bitcoin payments into yen for the sellers. The exact fee structure for users is yet to be revealed.
Furthermore, Mercari had previously ventured into the cryptocurrency space by launching its Bitcoin exchange in March 2023.
This platform feature enabled users to buy Bitcoin directly through Mercari using various means, such as their bank account, proceeds from sales, or loyalty points accumulated from selling items on the marketplace.
