Congressman Tom Emmer joins former President Donald Trump in resisting the adoption of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) over privacy concerns.
Echoing Trump’s apprehension to block Central Bank Digital Currencies over the privacy implications, Rep. Emmer warned of the threats posed by a surveillance-oriented CBDC.
The Congressman went on to tweet about his commitment to collaborating with Trump to curb the perceived growth of government oversight into individuals’ financial transactions. This signals a unified Republican front against implementing a system that could enable expanded monitoring of citizens’ spending habits.
In Congress, Emmer’s proposed CBDC Anti-Surveillance State Act continues to gain momentum with 75 co-sponsors. The legislation aims to institute safeguards against digital currency, expanding the government’s surveillance capabilities.
Emmer touted the increasing coalition backing his bill, underscoring growing bipartisan concern in Congress over balancing technological innovation with privacy rights.
While Trump has historically disapproved of cryptocurrencies, he has recently waded into the crypto space with multiple NFT project launches. Some analysts speculate a Trump presidential victory could spur significant Bitcoin growth.
