Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially terminated his bid for the 2024 Republican United States presidential nomination. The unexpected decision comes just days before the crucial New Hampshire primary, where DeSantis lagged significantly in polls compared to frontrunner Donald Trump and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.
In a video released on Sunday, DeSantis endorsed his one-time rival, Donald Trump. The 45-year-old governor acknowledged the prevailing sentiment among Republican primary voters, stating,
“It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance.” The endorsement comes after months of criticism and mockery between the two politicians.
In the video announcement, DeSantis took the opportunity to criticize Nikki Haley, his closest rival for the second position in the primary race. He asserted that Republicans should avoid reverting to the “old Republican guard” represented by Haley, describing it as a “repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism.”
Contrary to previous criticisms, Donald Trump welcomed DeSantis’s endorsement at a Rochester, New Hampshire rally. Trump expressed eagerness to collaborate with DeSantis to defeat the probable Democratic nominee, President Joe Biden.
Earlier endorsements for Trump came from Francis Suarez and Vivek Ramaswamy. Robert Kennedy Jr. remains the sole crypto-friendly candidate in the Republican primaries.
Kennedy has consistently supported blockchain technology, hailed Bitcoin as the “currency of freedom,” and criticized central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
With DeSantis withdrawing from the race, the Republican primaries are set to continue through Q1 2024. The U.S. elections are scheduled for November 5, 2024, adding interest to the unfolding political landscape.
This unexpected turn of events further intensifies the competition within the Republican party as candidates position themselves for the 2024 presidential race
