Sega is exploring the possibility of featuring its popular franchises in Web3 games through a collaboration with the blockchain project Finschia, as revealed by Sega Singapore, the branch overseeing the company’s global Web3 strategy.
As part of this collaboration, Sega Singapore is actively involved in securing the Finschia network by running a node and participating in the governance of the protocol. This move by Sega follows a series of announcements indicating the company’s growing interest and involvement in Web3 and blockchain games.
Contrary to Co-COO Shuji Utsumi’s earlier statement in July about Sega discontinuing Web3 games due to being “boring,” this new partnership suggests a shift, indicating Sega’s willingness to engage with Web3 through licensing lesser franchises while safeguarding its major IPs.
