WorldCoin’s futuristic Orb device, launched over 180 days ago, is set for an upgrade, according to Tools for Humanity CEO Alex Blania. The next iteration, expected in the first half of the year, will feature alternative colors and forms to present a more user-friendly design.
Blania emphasized a shift towards a look similar to “tune down” and “Apple product.” WorldCoin, created by Tools for Humanity, has secured around $250 million in funding from investors like a16z and Bain Capital Crypto.
Blania humorously mentioned that many Americans seem fascinated by the design of the Orb. The flagship device, resembling a colorful five-pound bowling ball from a sci-fi movie, has evoked mixed feelings of love and dislike.
At a StrictlyVC event in San Francisco, attendees exchanged their irises’ scans for World ID while engaging with Tools for Humanity’s booth, where field testing for the Orb was also underway.
During its testing phase, the project focused on gaining users in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Nairobi, Kenya; Lisbon, Portugal; and Bangalore, India.
This drew criticism for seemingly targeting developing economies. In the past year, WorldCoin expanded its reach by visiting cities like Tokyo, Miami, New York City, and San Francisco.
As per WorldCoin’s website, over the last week, more than 190,000 new accounts were created, bringing the total number of WorldCoin sign-ups to approximately 3.13 million people.
