Blackberry’s research division recently reported a cyberattack targeting Mexican banks and cryptocurrency exchanges. Using the AllaKore Remote Access Tool (RAT), the attackers aim to extract sensitive user data from these financial institutions.Â
The report indicates companies with revenues exceeding $100 million are primary targets. These businesses, which report to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), are at heightened risk.
Blackberry’s investigation revealed that most of these cyberattacks originate from Mexico Starlink IP addresses, suggesting a Latin American base for the threat actors.
The threat extends beyond the financial sphere. Large Mexican corporations in various sectors, including retail, agriculture, and manufacturing, are also targeted. This expansion demonstrates the attackers‘ adaptability and the broadening scope of their activities.
The transaction activity of 66,00 users stored information by the hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor which was breached on January 20. Trezor reassured its users about the safety of their digital assets, emphasizing existing cybersecurity problems for cryptocurrencies.
Investors are urged to exercise caution, particularly in sharing sensitive information. The increase in phishing attacks necessitates heightened vigilance to protect personal and financial data.
