Former Russian national Vladimir Dunaev was sentenced to more than five years in a U.S. prison for his role in developing Trickbot ransomware that has stolen more than $833 million in cryptocurrency, according to Chainalysis.
According to the Department of Justice (DoJ) statement, Dunaev, aged 40, pleaded guilty to operating Trickbot that infiltrated the systems of hospitals, schools, and various businesses worldwide. The ransomware infected computers, which gave criminals the ability to collect victim credentials and funds.
The improvement in the evasiveness of the malware from anti-virus software and the fine-tuning of remote access for cybercriminals characterized the Trickbot project undertaken by Dunaev.
In the Northern District of Ohio, Trickbot committed “10 victims in the Northern District of Ohio, including Avon schools and a North Canton real-estate company, were defrauded of more than $3.4 million.”
Detained in South Korea and transferred to the U.S. in 2021, Dunaev pleaded guilty on November 30, 2023, and was indicted for conspiracy to commit computer fraud, identity theft, wire fraud, and bank fraud.
The Department of Justice announced a sentence of five years and four months which is a sign that efforts are being made to fight cybercrime and secure victims.
