Crypto users are expressing concerns about a series of crypto-themed phishing emails that appear to originate from the content creator platform Patreon.
Reports on social media platforms, including X, suggest that scammers have been signing up crypto users’ email addresses for Patreon accounts and enrolling them in deceptive email lists associated with fake crypto projects on the platform.
Reports of these phishing attempts began surfacing on January 23, with victims receiving fraudulent airdrop offers from Patreon creators impersonating well-known crypto projects such as Chainlink, Solana, and Manta Network.
In response to community concerns, Patreon Support acknowledged the issue on January 25, attributing it to an “email verification problem” and a false claim from a crypto account pretending to be a Patreon creator. The platform assured users that affected accounts were being addressed.
A screenshot of an email from Patreon showed that the fake emails were part of a plan to access users’ cryptocurrency wallets secretly. Patreon claimed to have resolved the problem, but some users reported receiving scam emails in the following days.
Despite the platform’s efforts, the crypto community remains wary, with one Reddit user mentioning receiving multiple suspicious emails about a “Manta” airdrop.
The incident shows the continual threat of scams targeting cryptocurrency users. In 2023, over 300,000 crypto users fell victim to such scams, resulting in total losses of over $295 million.
The situation indicates the need to be careful within the crypto community to safeguard against scam attempts and the importance of platforms like Patreon taking proactive measures to protect their users’ security.
