German Police seize 50,000 Bitcoins ($2.1B) linked to illegal file-sharing probe, marking the country’s largest cryptocurrency seizure.
This marks the largest cryptocurrency seizure in Germany’s law enforcement history. The suspects allegedly acquired the Bitcoin through profits from a German file-sharing portal that operated until 2013.
One of the suspects voluntarily transferred the cryptocurrency to Germany’s federal police. The investigation, supported by Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, is centered around a piracy website violating the Copyright Act in 2013.
The seized Bitcoins may be linked to subsequent commercial money laundering. As of now, no official charges have been filed against the individuals. The US government made a significant Bitcoin seizure in 2023, confiscating $216 million tied to the Silk Road.
Currently holding $9.5 billion worth of Bitcoin, this action underscores the ongoing global efforts to combat illicit activities involving cryptocurrencies.
