George Osborne, a former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, has joined the advisory council of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (COIN).
The Co-founder of Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, posted on Twitter to welcome George Osborne. The former Finance Minister, who held the position of Chancellor from 2010 to 2016, provides decades of experience in the field of government and international finance.
Since leaving the government, Osborne has held several positions, including the editor-in-chief of London’s Evening Standard newspaper and partner at Robey Warshaw LLP, a boutique investment bank. From 2017 until 2021, he also served as an advisor to the BlackRock Investment Institute.
Osborne joins several prominent politicians on Coinbase’s Global Advisory Council, including former US Senator Patrick Toomey, US Representative Stephanie Murphy, US Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney, and US Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark T. Esper.
Faryar Shirzad, Chief Policy Officer of Coinbase, said in a statement, “We are pleased to have George join our council at an exciting time for us in the UK and globally.”
He claims that George brings an extensive range of business, journalistic, and political experience with him. They anticipate using his knowledge and expertise to help Coinbase expand globally.
During a period of regulatory scrutiny, Coinbase established the Advisory Council to guide its global growth strategy. The cryptocurrency exchange has extended access to its products to over 20 African countries and recently obtained licenses in France, Spain, Singapore, and Bermuda.
Nonetheless, the California-based business has encountered legal obstacles domestically. Last year, Coinbase was sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which said it had broken securities regulations.
