Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade has successfully completed its trial on the Holesky testnet, representing the final hurdle before an expected mainnet deployment in late February or early March.
The upgrade, merging enhancements from Cancun and Deneb, introduces the pivotal proto-dank sharding (EIP-4844) feature. This innovation aims to cut rollup transaction costs and improve data storage efficiency through the introduction of “blobs.”
The Holesky test net demonstrated a seamless execution, a critical milestone as Ethereum moves closer to deploying the upgrade on the main network. This development is touted as the most significant change for Ethereum since the Shapella upgrade in April 2023.
The Ethereum All Core Developers call scheduled for February 8 is eagerly awaited to confirm the mainnet activation date. Dencun’s deployment underscores Ethereum’s dedication to enhancing capacity and addressing congestion on its blockchain.
